Suggestion: integration of qt mailing lists to forum
-
Not going to do this yet, it's not a trivial integration. But it has been discussed a number of times and it's something we should look at for "2.0" of this site.
good to hear its in your future plans :)

I hope this is not to old a topic to ask, but ...
Any idea of a timeline for "2.0"? Keeping up with QtDN and the mailing lists is exhausting.
-
Sorry, don't have either a decision or a time. It might sound simple, but the limited exploration of integrating a mailman list and forum software tells me it's anything but simple. You'll need more regex magic than a Chinese firewall.
-
What about making the "lab blogs" visible here somehow?

Mailing list integration seems great to me as I prefer ML over web forums, but...
I understand that merging the two you would end up with the most limited combination of the two. How would you handle threading (I mean, like in mailing lists, where one reply is different if is made to one message or other)? And editing or deleting posts? With email is impossible to take back something you sent to other's people mail box.
Is really difficult, so I don't expect that most groups not even try to do it.
-
I agree with disperso, I don't think "fully merge" is the right approach.
It would be great to just have a "view" of the mailing lists on the web site, be able to search them, and maybe even post. I don't know if such thing is already available somewhere else.
We have something like this on the maemo web site for the developers mailing list and it is quite useful.

We have the basic e-mail list web archive here: http://lists.trolltech.com/qt-interest/
And a mail server (NNTP) of the same lists.

We have the basic e-mail list web archive here: http://lists.trolltech.com/qt-interest/
This is something that can be improved, but not on the devnet: it should be done upstream, on the Mailman source. If mailman had some web form where one could post a simple, basic reply, if you were subscribed to the list, but with the "nomail" flag set... That, and archives with much better usability. It's a shame, and a mess, when one finds that some mailman list with public archives appears on google way past mail-archive.com, gmane, etc.
I suppose you meant a news server. ;)
That feature is quite convenient, and gmane usually offers that too. If only like the news clients as much as I love KMail... :P

Yes, indeed, only wrote that so I could get another post in on this thread, honest.

I think some kind of integration between DevNet and the MLs would be useful. It would also be cool if people posting on the list would get credited with points. I mean: you are now stimulated to use only one way of contributing to the Qt community (complete with prizes), while the existing, older ways (MLs, IRC) are not counted. That may be something to considder.

I agree with Andre. I think devnet should be the portal to all "qt" things. If can't be fully integrated it should, at least, offer easy access to the other web sites.
It is very important to make devnet the entry point for anything qt related. After all, I think, this is the devnet "goal", isn't it?
