There was some discussion ongoing in thread "DevNet pages width":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/forums/viewthread/2143 wether the width of the DevNet pages should be limited in some way.

You can cast your vote here, so DevNet admins get some help when they make their desicions.

I'm voting for limit, but limit near 2-2.5k pixels.

like infoctopus, I use my mobile to access devnet at times and 2-2.5K would be too high ?

chetankjain, 2k is maximum, not static width. Poll itself is about stretchable width and needance of limiting this width.

This is really interesting, we discussed this a lot in the team and with the designers when we first started. Some of the "system" pages are fixed width while the rest has a min and a max width. The max width is identical to the Qt Labs Blog design but slimmer than Qt Documentation design.

The min width is a bit wider than the recommended 990px and last week we talked about setting the min down to 990px. But we left it as is.

The max width is set to fairly wide, but not unlimited, for readability reasons. We have tried unlimited but it just didn't feel right. You can play with this if you have firebug or something similar. Look for .page-dynamicwidth and let it rip :)

My screen is 1920x1200. I have a fair chunk of grey on both sides of the main page. But you know what? I wouldn't have it any other way. I think it'd look pretty weird if it took up the whole screen.

Do you know how hard it is to read a comment that flows from one side of the screen to the other? 2k pixels is just unusable. There's a reason why all other web pages use the method DevNet is using.

The problem is that screen resolutions increase and then you need to set different fixed widths.

I remember when I used a high res CRT and the world was stuck on 1024x768 and similar resolutions. Websites were awful.

                    Hi,

I also have a screen with a high resolution. I usually have two apps open, one on kleft sid eand one on the right side. A webpage usinge the hole width is really hard to read....

What sucky phones do you have? I love being able to see the full website. Sure, I have to zoom in from above, but no information is lost and the interface is familiar.
Either you scale stuff down a bit so I zoom less or you make the mobile version very optional (don't try to override m=false and so on). I don't like losing functionality :(

Anyway I think making a mobile version is a big undertaking. Much harder than simply stretching the page. Not worth it in my opinion.

Seriously, Opera Mini 5.1 Beta 2 (SIS) - it's new. On any Symbian^1^ / Symbian^3^. It's crazy fast and great for big pages. Combine with Swype for fast text entry.
                                http://m.opera.com/mini5s60.sis?act=dl&tag=mini5s60

You can't set Mini as default but just stick the shortcut on home screen.

You won't need mobile versions of any page again. Except Facebook Touch.

Then maybe you'll change your mind.

xsacha, not sure about "You won’t need mobile versions of any page again". Mobile versions are always usable from small screens because of less control elements, more organized content and so on.

generally, to wide page makes very little sense, it's harder to read a long line and esp. to switch to the next line.

Newspaper articles have comlumns for this reasons. That's proved historically.

Also a mobile version of devnet site would be just great! Almost everyone of us, I guess, has a smartphone. Pages optimized for width of 640px would be ideal for that.

Make another domain for mobile users. E.g. http://mobile.developer.qt.nokia.com (or a shorter link)

Amount of control elements can be the same, but these elemets can be relocated, e.g. from side to top/bottom
