    I agree.
I don't think people need an incentive to give + rate's. If people like something, they will rate it up.
I don't know why it contributes to personal rank.
Only thing I can think of is that it shows you have read a lot of topics.

Let's look from other side: maybe, points should be added to the author of topic instead of person who rates it up.

The points system isn't perfect, it simply rewards activity blindly. It avoids the topic of "quality vs. quantity" or "who should get the point" in that it simply counts "activity by you".

We could add a lot of complexity to it, and we will add a bit here and there (like a "thank you" feature), but we will not make the perfect rewards system. Not that we don't want to (pretending that we could, even if we wanted to!) :) but we're focusing on making it "good enough" and then rather spend time on the community and presenting Qt content - making that content discoverable. That is hopefully why you are here in the first place. To get the best Qt stuff on the planet.

The amount of time stackoverflow or ohloh spent on making their systems is probably staggering. One day, one day, we will be there. Just don't expect too much of this young site :)

I don't think OP should by definition receive points when their thread is rated up. More specifically, since the goal is to reward activity, as Alexandra said, it would be really silly if someone only does one post (5 points) and gets a bunch of bonus points because people are using the rating to monitor their own read threads :P. I'd be starting topics then, as it is much more likely to give me points faster than rating: rating is only one point per thread, the other option is 5 points + bonus per thread. However, it is probably unlikely that you would find enough useful stuff to talk about. Personally I don't care about the rating, nor the points. I would like a 'thanks' button, like used at QtCentre. I take much more gratification from "thanked x times in y posts" than in "178 posts\1035 points". (The rank names are cool though...)

We aim to please, a "thank you" button is in the plan :)

May be we can avoid giving points for rating for the time being. This will make sure that only good quality content are rated and people don't rate for just getting points.

Suggestion: The point counting for rating could be stopped at 5 rates per day?
