New posts counter is wrong sometimes

Just noticed that new posts counter added yesterday shows wrong value.
I'd visited DevNet hour ago and read all new posts. Now I've open DevNet again and saw that there are 3 new posts. New posts list showed me 2 topics and each of them contains only one new comment. So counter should be 2. -

Confirmed. Just opened new posts which showed 6 new posts, but listed just 5 in the page

Chetankjain, can you also count number of new comments (as I think they are countered in this counter, not threads number) to confirm?

tried it just now, and hope I got the count right :P
showed 12 new posts, listed 8, including replies there were 9
will recheck this once more when I login next -

Counted again. 3 new posts, one topic in list and only one new comment in this topic.

Can't find what does it count instead of number of new posts. Now it showed me 9 new posts with 2 topics on list and each contains one new comment. One contains 5 comments and other 3 comments totally. So can't make 9 here (either 8 if only comments are counted or 10 if comments and initial posts counted). It is a good quiz for curious brain :) Please, when you fix it tell us what was the problem.

ok to spice this up a bit, just saw 5 new posts, 4 threads listed, but threads+comments = 5 ...
so is it working or not working :P -

Note that the front page can be the victim of some caching and that will throw of the math by a bit.
In summary the code says $total_new = $post_count + $topic_count; based on a time stamp from the last visit.

Does that mean a new topic is counted both as a post and a topic?

hi Marius, today morning I saw some like 41 as the count for new posts, I had to close browser and reboot, when I logged back in, it was down to like 4 posts :( think I missed a whole bunch of posts... something to be looked into? I managed to open a few replies (13) from my subscriptions via mail, but lost the rest ...

but isnt that a bug? Unless one opens a post, it shuld continue to be listed...

It's "Posts since last visit" not "Unread" I'm afraid.

I did this,
- Login to devnet, 7 new posts, read one post
- Now devnet home page shows 6 new posts
- From a totally new browser logged into devnet and still see 6 new posts
So if this were posts since last visit, it should have shown 0 ?

more issues ...
just now went to the devnet home, and saw that there were 4 unread posts, I clicked on it and saw a single post with 2 replies, and I already had viewed this post with the same 2 replies ... -

Do you remember if you had a page view on the front page earlier with 4 unread posts? If so we need to tweak the cache headers to be stricter.

Just wanted to know if it's possible to set the "new post counter" back to zero without having to open all forum posts? Pretty anoying and loging in and out doesn't help either

Would be nice to be able to reset the counter manually or by loging out/in, as they are supposed to be the posts since my last visit.... I'aint going to open all 1053 forum posts!!! :-)
