Does it have any indication or is it that you just don't get any option to comment.

"This":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/forums/viewthread/1360/P15/#11181 thread could be an example.

Yes, that's the only indication. There are a few topics on here that have no comment box - that means it's closed.

Then in that case I think some sort of indication would be better. Some color change or something like that. May be add a closed tag to the thread header.

By the way, how do I close a thread?

No we can't. Only admins can.

you can request one of the moderators also (denis, tobias or myself) .. this would make sense if you are the author of a thread and asked a question or posted something and found your answer .. this will also block spammers from continuously posting meaningless or zero value add replies to these posts ..

we anyways recommend new questions, related questions be posted in a new separate thread - to enable easy search later

Well then Dinosaur Breeder can become moderator of a sub forum. And being a moderator you can have rights to close the thread.

But I really don't know how these rights are issued or if they are effective.

QtK: Chetankjain, Denis and I requested admin rights and we got them. You have to request them explicitly. It does not make sense to hand out admin rights to people who do not want them in the first place.

Again about topic of thread. I think that notification about thread closing will be helpful for anyone who is subscribed to thread (by email).

Well then a user and a moderator end up being the same. Solves a few problems :) Thanks. What about being able to edit FAQs though? You request this too?

xsacha: The FAQ is imported from the support DB on a regular basis. So all we can do is ask the support team to fix the texts:-(

No offense to them but I didn't imagine it was from a support DB. I thought it must have been forum users who added this. With all the mis-formatting and so on.
Maybe it was because they added it when code tags weren't properly supported or something.
Or is this a conversion problem with moving it from support DB to here?

Is there any way to access the support DB? Is it hosted somewhere else or it's internal?

xsacha, it is internal of course :) it is the maintained db used by Qt support AFAIK.

xsacha: That happens when you use a database that was originally meant to be purely internal:-(

Add to that the issue of moving from some format internal to the database to HTML. I am sure some of the issues are due to the conversion script.

Have you ever thought of having it the other way around? Have admins here add/edit FAQs and then send that over to the internal Qt Support?
I guess you guys need it to be perfect internally as it is used for commercial customers. I can't see why, with admins and good moderation, it can't be a higher quality using wiki style contributions though.

A very "loud" indicator of closed thread would be great... And it would be even better if it could used on searches... Someone looking for answers would start by the ones that the search criteria matches and are flagged as closed. Someone looking to help would concentrate on threads that are not marked as closed.

A QA-forum style (think Stackoverflow, Expert Exchange, Yahoo! answers) is probably one of the big things we want to add in 2011. The number of interactions to support a QA forum is plenty, so it's not a quick addition to the site I'm afraid.

I imagine that adding to the "google search" is probably much harder... What about adding the the "Posts since last visit"?
