Restrict "popular tags" to those that match the current prefix in edit line. When there is no input yet or a comma is added, then show the overall most popular tags. I'm not sure, but on Ohloh (the online OSS catalogue), tag input seems to work like this.

BTW: have a look on "the Qt entry there":http://www.ohloh.net/p/qt

WolfP: You already posted this topic "here":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/forums/viewthread/2176/ by the way. Mistake?

Tags are quite small and there aren't many of them so only showing ones that match the prefix may not display much at all. Have you tried this? Pick a letter and find how many tags you get. Then two letters. Also, I wonder of the AJAX loading time.

Was it to do with the quotation marks in title? Should make them aware if that's a bug.

You're right: Restriction to all those that contain the current input would be even better and not harder to implement.

On the other hand, suffixes seem to be somewhat easier to understand for most users.
And: prefix matching will surely bind less resources than containment matching.

I know this is a bit off-topic (there's no private messaging(?) and not much to discuss about this suggestion anyway).
But, how do you become a moderator/admin of a forum chetankjain? Do you just get chosen? Or is it solely because of your rank as in Points & Ranks. How do you choose which one to be a mod of?
Just wondering if I'll ever be able to close topics :P.

xsacha: You ask "here":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/forums/viewthread/446/ once you have the required rank. At least that is how the old farts like Chetankjain, Denis and me became admins.

As I discovered right now the wished behavior is already implemented in the "tag search":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/tags the ordering there is already by popularity.

Isn't it only one small step to make the update-on-edit search available to the tagging itself?

As long as it highlights part of the tag to make it clear that matching is happening.

Even with multiple matches (like "e" in "developer")? ...could worsen the readability.

Wolf P. How did you stumble upon this page?

Sometimes I want to search for a tag that I made earlier but I can't find any tag search, only google search.
So what I do is find a tag nearby (in forum or something), click it and then change the tag in the URL.

I think that right now tag search but be more useful really. Especially if you know the common ones.

I realise that now, only because you linked to it before.
But should I bookmark that page or something? Is there no way to get to it from devnet itself? I usually get to everything by clicking on links rather than bookmarks. Bookmarks are especially difficult on my mobile phone.

How will other people find this? It needs to be easier to find than the Google Search which is on every page. IMO.

xsacha, you can find link to it at main page (near tags list named "see all") or at page with searching by tag (link "Looking for other tags?").

Aha! I figured it was just a list of the tags used without search mechanism. Thanks!

I think this should be made more visible. Perhaps on every page. I guess it is a plan for future as tags mature but I'd argue they have matured now!
