I am wondering what the reason for the alternative text when introducing a picture is?
If someone is entering nothing for this text one ends up with a broken link.

Image ALT text is HTML standard for ages. I'd guess it's here for that reason. Most people do not enter an alt text, though. The parenthesis should be omitted then.

I've opened a issue "QTWEBSITE-337":https://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTWEBSITE-337 for this - feel free to vote for it :-)

Sorry, my explanation was a bit short.
I mean here in devnet. When is clicking on the image button above the posting window a dialog opens for introducing the external link to the image. Subsequently one has to enter an alternative text. It is not clear to me, why this text should be introduced?
I do not see a purpose, but may be I am overseeing something.
More critical is that one is producing a link in the text which is broken, when no text has been entered.

            Our posting crisscrossed :-)
Thanks for the explanation and filing a bug report.

You're welcome - and I have to catch up with my weekend bug report rate. Last weekend I missed it miserably (not single one!), and I'm pretty sure the Trolls in Oslo were missing to be mailbombed on Monday :)

Oh, is there a hall of fame at JIRA as well?
Then I have missed a good opportunity. :-(

Not to my knowledge. Most times I send an email directly :)

Usually in cases when an image link is broken or invalid or not displayed for any reasons, the alternate text will be displayed instead. I don't know how it operates here.

Thanks for explanation. That makes sense. It makes especially sense for this forum, because the pictures are stored somewhere else causing most likely a broken link sometime later. I will add a comment to Volker's bug report giving a better explanation in the dialog box.
