Today I've noticed under the tagging edit field you get a list of possible words based on the letters you already typed. Works great!

I also noticed there where plurals in there. Isn't that contradictory to the tagging guidelines as you can read below?

    bq. General guidelines for tagging:
Avoid plurals, prefer singulars in all reasonable cases
Example: tag with “nokia phone” not “nokia phones”

The tags will be messed up a bit over time, I'd say. I'm not sure what the magic scripts will do that the Oslo guys have running regularly. And I'm pretty sure, we can expect some cleanup in the future, with some more tag and Q&A related features sneaking in here...

It would be interesting to know how those magic scripts work / what they do. If they look in the current tags, then cleaning up is supposed to be done by devnet users I guess.

Edit: i just did a small test. I searched for the tag "problem" in the tagging content. Result none.
The autocompletion didn't show it, but typing "not..." showed a tag with " not a qt problem"

So the conclusion is the scripts do look in the existing tags.

Glad you discovered our new autocomplete feature :)

The autocomplete is based on currently used tags, all of them. So even though the guidelines says "no plurals" we still have them in the tag database because they are in limited use.

Another new feature is "tag aliases" so we can in time prune out the plurals and very similar tags, like "msvs" and "visual studio". I haven't had the time to dig into making aliases yet though, I'm travelling a bit this and next week.

            Thanks Marius!

The tag aliases sound like a very good idea too. Looking forward to it.

It is a great improvement for tagging of posts.
However, I have noticed some slower response in sending off the tags. Sometimes I have to press a couple of times the retuirn key. Is this due to the tagging suggestions?

Yeah, setting tags can be very slow. Much slower even than just navigating to a new page.

Looking into that, it is indeed slow.

Hmmm... looks like clicking the Add tag button is faster than hitting the Enter key in the tags field?

sometime it looks that way, but not always. sometimes, also hitting enter is fast (at least for me) ...

I never couldn't see any pattern in when tagging ist fast/slow. Even with the new tagging it's pretty fast at one time and occasionally as slow as it was before the change. As it's kind of AJAX based, I always blamed my internet connection for that...

It looks a bit like we have to press "enter" twice and the "add tag" is working with a single hit.
I have tested this with "new tag" which is not in the list yet. It appeared that with pressing "enter" once you may wait for ever. This might indicate that pressing "enter" the first time is just confirming that you are choosing this value. The second "enter" would send it to the server.
However, this is all guess work. The Trolls will know better.
Probably we just have to get used to it.
