Qt Creator 3.5 is quite old. Maybe try if your problem persists with a newer Qt Creator, like 4.7 from our prebuilt binaries at https://download.qt.io/official_releases/qtcreator/4.7/4.7.1/

RE: Qt Creator - clang code model doesn't find types, even though code compiles
You have a yellow warning icon in the editor's toolbar. If you click this, you'll see details on issues that the code model had when parsing included files. Maybe this gives some hints on what is wrong.
RE: I feel cheated.
Now I'm trying example 1 of the book, which starts with #include <QApplication>. VS can't find that. Anybody know what I'm supposed to put in my "include"project settings?
Sorry, but this is one of the things that you cannot just transfer from a Qt4 book to Qt5. Modules have been introduced, so QtWidgets are not the default and your project must explicitly specify that it wants to use it. Using a Qt5 book for learning to program with Qt5 is definitely preferable.
RE: Ada and Qt integration into Qt Creator
In Qt Creator 4.8 we introduce an experimental client for the "Language Server Protocol".
Looks like there is at least some language server for Ada (https://github.com/reznikmm/ada-lsp, state unknown to me). That might work in our language client in Qt Creator 4.8.
For highlighting you'll also need to install the highlighting spec file for Ada, Tools > Options > Text Editor > Generic Highlighter > Download definitions, find Ada and download.
Regarding QtAda and integration with Qt in other ways, no idea.
RE: QtCreator keyboard bug?
Quite surprising to see this, to be honest, as Qt Creator is actually developed in Germany :-) so devs should notice.
Most developers here probably use US or British layout even if they are german, and even if their keyboard is german (like I do), since the german keyboard layout is pretty developer unfriendly. Latest after you get problems with your right thumb hurting, you switch ;)
RE: QT Creator's .pro file - where is the debug/release intelligence
@debug: TARGET = appnameD@
The correct thing to do is
@CONFIG(debug, debug | release): TARGET = appnameD@
