QQuickView renders slowly in QWidget

  • Hello,

I am working on a QWidgetApplication, which consists of 3 tabs:

    • the first and the second tab contain QWidgets
    • While the last one contains QML

To insert the QML in QWidget, I used the following method in the MainWindow constructor :

    QQuickView * view = new QQuickView(QUrl("qrc:/include/my_file.qml"));
    QWidget *container = QWidget::createWindowContainer(view);
    ui->verticalLayout->addWidget(container);

When I go from the first to the second tab, it's fluid, no problem. As soon as I reach the last tab containing the QML display, there is GUI freezing during 1s-2s, before display the QML.

Even with a QML containing only the drawing of a rectangle, there is this slowness.

    My platform : Qt5.6 on Centos 7.3

Do you have any ideas ? Or workaround to force the QML rendering before display the last tab ?

    Thanks,

    Yoann

    Hi and welcome to devnet,

Did you also try with QQuickWidget ?

  • Hi SGaist,

Yes I already tried with the QQuickWidget, and there was the same problem of slowness...

  • Lifetime Qt Champion

Can you test with a more recent version of Qt ?

  • Hi SGaist,

Same problem of slowness with the latest version QT 5.9.2. Otherwise I tested the software on a Debian Jessie and a QT 5.3, and there no problem.

So, the problem seems to come from Centos 7.3 maybe ?

  • Lifetime Qt Champion

If you can compare the application built with the same version of Qt it would be even better.

Beside the Linux distribution, what other differences do you have between the machines (I'm thinking graphics card/driver combo).

  • Hello,

To better compare I installed a new Centos 7.3 VM on my laptop, the problem is the same with Qt 5.9.2.
But, I tested in Qt 4.8, and there no problem on my two Centos 7.3 machines.

    1. On my Centos 7.3 VM, the configuration is as follows:
    #$ lspci | grep VGA
00: 02.0 VGA controller compatible: InnoTek Systemberatung GmbH VirtualBox Graphics Adapter

No graphic card on this machine.

    #$ glxinfo | grep -i vendor
    server glx vendor string: SGI
glx vendor string client: Mesa Project and SGI
    OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.

    1. On my other Centos 7.3 machine, the configuration is as follows:
    #$ lspci | grep VGA
06: 00.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Electronics Systems Ltd. G200eR2

No graphic card on this machine.

    #$ glxinfo | grep -i vendor
    server glx vendor string: SGI
glx vendor string client: Mesa Project and SGI
    OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.

    1. For my Debian Jessie, I have a graphic card Nvidia 9600M GT with proprietary drivers.

    Thanks,

    Yoann

The problem with your comparison is that you are using different major versions of Qt, some running in virtual environments and other on physical machines.

  • Hello SGaist,

Sorry but my last message was not clear enough. I understand your remark on my comparison but how to explain that I find the same slowness on:

    • Physical machine Centos 7.3 - Qt5.9.2
    • Virtual Machine Centos 7.3 - Qt 5.9.2

After I looked for a major version of Qt without slowness and I came across the 4.8 that works between my physical and virtual machines on Centos 7.3.

  • Lifetime Qt Champion

There's been lots of changes between Qt 4 and Qt 5.

Which driver are you using ?

  • Hey,

How old is that graphics card ? From the looks of it, you are using the software pipeline rather than the hardware accelerated hence your performance issue.

  • Hey,

There is no graphic card on this machines :

It might be an onboard chip but you have one: Matrox Electronics Systems Ltd. G200eR2 which doesn't seem to be very recent, is it ?

What does glxinfo tell you ?

  • Yes, it's an onboard graphic chipset for Dell PowerEdge R420. It's not very recent, this chipset was designed in 2001-2002 according Matrox constructor website.

Information from glxinfo on pastebin : https://pastebin.com/0H7UG4LD
