ble scanner not working

I followed the example code given for the qt bluetooth low energy tutorial and it is having trouble detecting ble devices. Sometimes it detects devices, but most of the time it won't. I have bluetooth turned on for my laptop. Next, I ran the ble scanner example provided in the qt interface, but it can't detect any devices at all. Can someone help me figure out why I can't detect ble devices? Thanks!

I am using ubuntu 16.4 and qt 5.9. It's not that I don't understand how to do it, I think it's that my computer is not set up correctly with the right packages because the example won't work.

@th3only1left sorry - cannot help with ubuntu. Did my work on Android and iOS and also tested on macOS where all works well.
