GUI does not match between OSX and Win..

i am looking at using Qt for an open source project i'd like to release on both mac and windows. i built a simple test project, and compiled and ran it on windows(surface book) and macbook pro. i found that the screen layouts are not really compatible. the font size is way off and the window size is completely different.
i thought it was because i was due to the pixel density of the retina display, but i feel like i read that this is handled automatically. while the apps look completely different, everything looks sharp, and non pixelated.
it's different enough that mainwindow looks different in the creator on both sites..Any ideas? thanks!
