    One damn thing after another with this thing. It should not be this hard to compile and run a sample program.

      Normally it's not.
      But if you choose Visual studio Qt and dont have the actual visual studio compiler installed.
      (its NOT included)
      It would say so,
      Or you are on linux and it dont detect your gcc.

      If you are on windows , then
      https://download.qt.io/official_releases/qt/5.7/5.7.0/
      and
      qt-opensource-windows-x86-mingw530-5.7.0.exe
      often just works for starting Desktop apps. programming.
      It contains both compiler and debugger.
