Should 'Qt Ambassadors' get limited edition 'Nokia N950 phone'

  • Nokia is going to release a limited edition 'Nokia N950 phone' for meego development and this is not for sale. Should 'Qt Ambassadors' get this phone?

    http://www.developer.nokia.com/Devices/MeeGo/

  • Can't totally ignore this possibility, probably it might be a surprise as "this":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/forums/viewthread/4408/ one was handed over.

  • I guess ambasadors should just check their email... :-)

  • yes.. really happy to see the mail.. filled up the form and praying "Qt" to approve my proposal :)

  • OK filled up the form, hope that Qt will be interrested,
Also, what kind of applications are mostly appriciated/accepted?

  • My guess? Something that will stand out of the crowd. Perhaps something that uses NFC. Just a guess though.

  • Yes, I see, interresting, but isn't an easy task though.

Well as far as i know, there is QML Bindings for NFC, but i am not sure if its already available...

  • Qt Mobility 1.2 should have NFC APIs - it should have to be supported by Ovi store though...

    Hi Andre, All,

I am really excited by the option to develop and test apps on N950 so this morning I have completed the form for the Nokia N9 Developer Program. But after that I did not receive any confirmation e-mail. Is this normal? Have anyone of you received a confirmation email after completing the request form for N950?

    10x,
    Leon

  • I don't know, I did not try for a device. In case you were wondering: I do not work for Nokia.

Personally, I am more of a desktop developer, and have less interest in the mobile space at the moment.

I am experimenting with MeeGo on my netbook in my free time. It is real fun (for developers) and I am interested to see the MeeGo/Harmattan on a smartphone.

I recommend all of you to try MeeGo too when you have spare time :)

  • Hi Leon.
The mail that we got says we will get confirmation mail by July 6th. I guess we will have to wait for some more time!!!

Even though the N950 is missing the NFC? What is actually the advantage of N950 over N9? Only the keyboard?

I know that selected Qt Ambassadors will be notified on or before Wednesday, July 6 via email but I was expecting a automated email that my submission is received successfully :) I guess that as a developer I doubt in everything :D Anyway I will wait and keep my fingers crossed :)

Not all technical specification of N950 are known at the moment. There are several known at moment difference between both models:

    • size and type of the display

    • N950 has a slot of SD card

    • Different battery (N950 Li-Ion 1320 mAh vs N9 Li-Ion 1450 mAh (BV-5JW) )

  • I hope that nokia doesn't make the same error twice, by not implementing autofocus in the camera like they did with c7 :)

  • Moderators

bq. I hope that nokia doesn’t make the same error twice, by not implementing autofocus in the camera like they did with c7 :)

I saw on youtube someone taking a picture and first he clicked on that part of the screen where he wanted the focus. Looked really smooth, with control from the user.

  • Can you please post the link of the video here?

It is not only c7 - e7 and c6-01 also does not have autofocus.

But do not worry both "N9":http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n9-3398.php and "N950":http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n950-3997.php have autofocus according to gsmarena! :)

Yes WOW! Not gonna lie.... This phone is pretty sexy.

  • I heard that NOKIA is done with MeeGo, is it worth it to develop for it ?

  • Even if they are done with MeeGo, N9 shows that with little more effort MeeGo can become one of the leading smart phone OS. More than that its open source and getting lot of help from Community.

Intel is betting heavily on Meego, so I am sure they will go all the way to find somebody else to make phones on Meego. And N9 will stay in the game for next couple of years like N900. So your apps will be alive for 1-2 years from now which is good time frame for any application in Mobile space.

  • I'm playing with an meego netbook , a kind of prototype, and, very interesting.

looking forward to get a N9.

  • Wow it's beautiful! i'll get one or two...

  • Couple of interesting posts

    http://www.unwiredview.com/2011/06/23/elop-new-full-touch-ui-is-coming-to-nokia-s40-phones/

    http://tabulacrypticum.wordpress.com/2011/06/24/is-s40-nokias-future/

All of them says Qt is being ported to S40 and S40 will anyways be getting 1gh processor. It will be interesting.

EDIT: sorry, I guess I should not be spreading rumors.

Again these are not official communication from Nokia. And I remember Nokia promoting Qt saying Qt is Everywhere and all future devices will support Qt. And everyone now is aware that Windows Phone 7 will not have Qt in it.

So decisions are changed and unless we hear something from the new Nokia management we cant be sure if Qt will be supported in S40.

  • No Qt for Windows Phone 7 ?! But it isn't even logical, Nokia announced a Windows Phone, isn't it better to make Qt compatible for W Mobile 7?

Well N9 like N900 will be always alive and remembered in the developer community. But then it does not increase the chances of companies developing applications for a platform with only one device release expected and that too limited (N9).

Intel is going to promote it but it would be mainly for tabs and netbooks. Also the UX layer would differ, it would never be Harmattan as I believe its proprietary to Nokia.

So do you think companies will invest their resources now to develop for N9. It will be individual developers and open source supporters who might come up with applications for N9. And some companies might take this opportunity to port their existing Qt apps to N9 if it requires very less effort. But complete new development and new investments specifically for N9 Harmattan SDK is ruled out - this is my personal view and others may differ. But would like to read what is their view on this.

Its logical to make Qt available for Windows Phone 7 and by that it would reach to more heights and be more popular and will end up becoming the most preferred framework to work on.

But what will happen to its competitor product - they earn revenue by licensing their framework and OS to developers.

  • As you probably heard ,Mr.Elop is firm on going forward with windows mobile. There will be no Qt even if N9 turns out to be a smash hit. The deal has been done there is no going back now. The first windows Nokia phone will either make or break Nokia but going by N9 design , there is no doubt that the first windows-Nokia phone will be really good . The only problem is software- no one knows have windows OS will behave !
