captureMouse --> wheelEvent

I am developing a QT5 based app.
On kubuntu 16.04.I am developing a custom QWidget derived class as a control.
I need to capture mouse wheel events off screen, if the user has moved the mouse off the screen whilst the mouse button is pressed, i need the wheel to zoom in and out.
Mouse wheel events are fired when the cursor is inside the QWidget but not inside. (i.e. my wheelEvent)
captureMouse doesn't seem to help, and the docs say it is not necessary as it is fired when the mouse is pressed.
