AVD performance and usage

Hi,
I finally got the Qt 5.5 IDE working and am able to deploy simple "hello android" program to Nexus S AVD.
A couple questions:
1 - why does it take soooooooo long for the AVD to launch?
2 - Is there a way to deploy the program to the AVD that is already running? I made a change and another instance of AVD popped up and I had to wait again. If this is normal development is going to be excruciating.

- For me it's working: if I start my app in an emulator then that emulator instance is used again when I build and deploy again
