Problem with left mouse moving window

I have an application that uses a promoted widget in designer that captures mouse events to change the view on a QGLWidget scene. This works fine when the mouse event is accepted. But when I want a parent widget to handle mouse input and I set the QGLWidget derived class to ignore mouse events something happens to the ignored message on the way to the parent widget. When left mouse events occur on the QGLWidget and it is ignoring events the application window starts moving.
I get the initial mousePressEvent but I don't get the subsequent mouseMoveEvent.
How can I get my parent widget of the QGLWidget to receive mouseMoveEvents? Who or What is getting in the way?
