No gl_VertexID in vertex shader...

I'm just now trying to learn GLSL and am starting with the Cube example. I'm trying to create an integer initialized to the gl_VertexID but that variable doesn't seem to exist. And the code fails to compile when initializing the shaders. What am I doing wrong?
