There is plenty ABOUT the examples...

Did you check out the "source zips? ":http://releases.qt-project.org/qt5/5.0.1/single/qt-everywhere-opensource-src-5.0.1.zip
I would assume that you can find them at least in there. -

also at http://qt.gitorious.org/qt but I've answered my own question. The examples are already installed, just not in one place. It's just a matter of clicking on 'welcome' (top left of IDE), selecting the 'examples' tab and running! lol.. I'm not getting enough sleep!
