Hi Sam!
So does this mean that I _MUST_ use gravatar to have a profile picture?
.
Well that has been an issue for everyone, So YES you have to use gravatar to have a profile picture.
Reason:-
We choose to use the fairly popular gravatar service to lift that maintenance burden from the site team and frankly speaking - we can't match the image handling UI, age rating checks and copyright monitoring systems that gravatar has, even if we tried. And in my personal opinion the concept of gravatars (globally recognized avatar) makes sense. We also have gravatar support on our blogs."Automattic":http://automattic.com/, the WordPress related company behind gravatar, is well respected so I hope it will not deter too many from adding their profile image.
So I guess I'll be pictureless then. I don't want to open an account just to have a profile picture.
Its always good to have a profile picture. It adds an identity to your profile. With gravatar the advantage is that where ever you post/comment on internet with your registered email id, it will automatically add you gravatar pic to the comment. That helps you to create your own brand and reduces the burden to again upload a new/same/different profile pic for different sites
And suppose even if you change your profile name people will recognize you by your profile picture.

I remember being annoyed the first time I encountered Gravatar, too. But in fact it proves mightily useful and maintenance-free. Ever since I've uploaded my picture I had no reason to log in to Gravatar again, yet many web sites simply pick up the avatar without the need to set anything up.

Note that may be a bonus or a negative thing. I have also been slightly annoyed to find my pic on sites where I responded and I did not intend my pic to show up. People move in different circles at the same time, and they might not want to use the same profile in all of them. Of course, you could always use different email addresses between them.

Thats a fair point, I usually get annoyed in the same way with facebook, If logged-in and visit any site then suddenly a popup comes trying to connect/requesting to post on behalf and all other stuff. Same is with the smart phones, by default the synchronization with gallery/contacts is ON which directly uploads everything in the social network and if someone is not aware then it becomes a problem.

@sierdzio : I really like your gravatar. It's so funny! :)
@Andre : I agree with what you say. But I use my secondary email ID for all these forums and other public profiles. So the picture will not bother me.
Tell me about it! I'm so sick of that. Btw, I signed up for gravatar but it doesn't look like my avatar is updated here. I've used the same email ID in both places.
EDIT: Yay! It updated after a while :)
