[Suggestion] Bring "bug reports" under the same roof
-
The trolls do such a good job of commenting and fixing bugs reported that I think it should be something a little more accessible and promoted to the development community.
Also being able to include bug reports while searching on this web site would help people finding bugs. Would be even better if there was an easy way to "promote" some thread on the forum into a bug report. I can only imagine that some discussions here will end up with the "please report bug" and would be helpful to the trolls to have any and all context to work with.
If I may: congratulation "bug hunting" trolls! I have never had such good feedback and time devoted to my bug reports in any other "platform"

we've had similar discussions in the past.
you will have seen that we create a bug in the bugs tracker and post back the link in the thread and also tag the thread. but i like your idea on this kind of integration, but the workflow should be such that it will be of help to the trolls and not introduce any more complexity for them, by them having to come into devnet posts to dig for info ... can we integrate keeping these factors in mind?marius what do you think of this idea?

There is already a tagging style introduced "qtwebsite-70":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/search/tag/qtwebsite-70 edit the search line to qtwebsite and see all of them.
DevNet's "tags":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/tags and "labels in the bugtracker":http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTWEBSITE#selectedTab=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.project:labels-heatmap-panel could be considered as a very similar concept, and if they could get merged somehow this would be GREAT I think
But I have another request: in many cases, the bug report would be helped a lot if I could add corporate sources to the report. In this case, a way to make sure the attachment is seen only by one dev and gets deleted when the bug is done would be great.
You get that for free if you own a valid commercial Qt license.

As the community gets larger, it may be hard to respond to all the queries. Not exactly a reason to integrate the bug report feature. I'm sure the aim is growth.
The way it works is great already :) As you have seen.

Paying for support when you're making profitable proprietary apps that require commercial support (hidden, NDA-style attachments)? Crazy!
If you need greater support, you should pay for it. That's a good business model for free software.
So, basically that feature of bug reports does exist.

I guess above all I think any good developer has to be lazy... We are so lazy that we try to find smart ways of doing repetitive things so we only have to do once!
Jokes apart ... I do believe that nokia, qt and the developer community will benefit of anything that makes "more" of the information concentrated in one place.
My conclusion is that probably what I am looking for is a "developer portal" for nokia (qt, maemo, meego, forum nokia, bugs, symbian, ...). If nothing else it should allow me to search on all the web sites at once. I think it would be a great tool....

Last week we made and purchased a Google custom search engine with the following sites included in the search pool:
labs.qt.nokia.com/* Qt Labs Blog
developer.qt.nokia.com/* Qt Developer Network
qt.nokia.com/* qt.nokia.com
lists.trolltech.com/* Qt Mailing Lists
qtcentre.org/* Qt Center (Forum)
forum.nokia.com/* Forum NokiaThe thinking is along your lines, to provide a singe search that would cover key sites. And with "refinements" like you see on this site, where you get tabs (Wiki, Forum) for various sections.
Google changed their pricing from "pages indexed" to "# of queries" not long a go, and this made it possible.
We are not sure where to promote it yet - ideas welcome :)

marius under forum section, can you further create subsections for the various sub forums (quick, tools, desktop etc) ... that would be even more useful

We can, yes, I'll add it to the list. We can test it "live" and gather feedback.

thanks, and
suggest2: likewise subsections under new posts.. under heavy loads didn't know which thread to start from
suggest3: under threads I've subscribed to
suggest4: threads posted by mebasically any search :P

Not sure I understand you right, can you elaborate?

ok at one point last weekend, I had like 3 pages of results under "New posts" ... can some categorization happen there based on various forums (again desktop, quick, tools etc)
or if I go my profile and try to dig through the 1061 posts I've done, easier for me to narrow down if they were pushed into categories
just a thought .. what do you think? would it be a helpful feature?
-
Ah, now I understand. I'll have a look and see if the forum software supports that out of the box, or if surgery is needed.
-
It would be very cool if we could use the labels as search criteria... kind of what you do with gmail using "label:mylabel" ... it could be just "tag:quick" ... Is it possible?
