QML PathView: Animation Control using other means than [in|de]crementCurrentIndex

the spinner example coming with Qt 4.8.0 would be an ideal starting point for my planned SlotMachine Sim Game, but when I control the animation using the provided methods, the animation behaviour is not really "smooth".
Is there another possibility to access the animation control from C++ Code?
