Because accidentally loosing data is a lot worse than having to answer "are you sure?" every single time. Most smart people don't consider themselves to be perfect and thus they added this 'annoying' prompt.

@SimonSchroeder As I mentioned - "accidentally " removing stuff was GENERALLY nonrecoverable in DOS days . This is a thing of the past - most deletions are recoverable...But you are correct "... nobody is perfect..." and a gold start to whomever comes up from what movie is that line from.

I, for one, don't use the trash can. And sometimes, especially on Linux, I use the command line instead. None of my deletions are recoverable (unless you mean some special software that digs up my data from the grave in a very tedious and nerve wrecking way).
I am not entirely sure, but I believe macOS just puts it in the bin without asking for confirmation. Or maybe hitting OK is so ingrained in me that I don't notice anymore...
