Lubuntu / GUI not starting / qt.qpa.xcb: could not connect to display

Hello there,
I am running Lubuntu in a virtual machine under Win10, using VirtualBox. Used to work like a charm, until I upgraded Lubuntu through apt-get full-upgrade.

Now when I start my Lubuntu machine I am stuck on the terminal and the DM does not start.
If I try to start manually the UI using startlxqt, I am getting the same error message as reported in other posts, such as this one: https://forum.qt.io/topic/93247/qt-qpa-plugin-could-not-load-the-qt-platform-plugin-xcb-in-even-though-it-was-found. However the different solutions offered in this post did not work for me.

qt.qpa.xcb: could not connect to display 
qt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin "xcb" in "" even though it was found.
This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

Available platform plugins are: eglfs, linuxfb, minimal, minimalegl, offscreen, vnc, wayland-egl, wayland, wayland-xcomposite-egl, wayland-xcomposite-glx, xcb.

Would someone have a clue to help me get out of this?

You do not have a problem loading the xcb libraries like the post you quoted. You have a problem with the set up for connecting to your display, such as DISPLAY environment variable for Xorg or maybe you are using Wayland. Search this forum or the web for that error string for a whole heap of hits.

What version did you upgrade from/to? My Ubuntu 20.04 uses Xorg display, but later ones will move to Wayland?
