"Big Icons" on left side of edit screen ??

1. What is the official name of what appears to be standard "tab" implementation ?
2. Why is "design" disabled ?
   I can switch to "design" after few awkward (not very intuitive) choices from options...
   And switch back to "Edit ".

That's the Mode Selector ([1] at https://doc.qt.io/qtcreator/creator-quick-tour.html )

2. Why is "design" disabled ?

"Design" opens Qt Designer. It is only applicable when you open a .ui file.
