Function fopen and Android assets

I am developing an Android app using the TinySoundFont library (it is just a single header file) I have a binary file which needs to be accessed by the library and internally it uses fopen. Is it possible to access the file using fopen and the path starting with "assets:/" as docs say?. I need it because the TSF library only uses fopen internally.
