Can't drag widgets form or navigator Mac OS Catalina

I'm trying get started with the Designer in QT creator after writing some simple PyQt5 apps by hand. I've created a project, created a form by creating a .ui file. But I cannot seem to drag any widget anywhere, as I've seen in Youtube videos. There is absolutely no indication that the widget has been selected and the drag will not initiate.
I'm on Mac OS Catalina.
This seems so basic that it seems I'm missing something very stupid. What is going on?
