How to have QWidget grab key events before shortcut handler?

I have a widget that needs to specially handle some key events that the main application is currently using shortcuts to interpret. I was hoping to grab the events before the shortcut handler did by overriding the event() method of my widget, but I'm still not getting them first. How do I do this?
