QML emulator crashes line 1

I would like to use the designer when making qtquick apps but as soon as I click the designer the error message say the emulator crashed line 1. This is fresh install on a Linux mint 20.1 box.
I have noticed that all the similar complaints are old and with no clear reason or resolution given. That seems odd to me since I installed my copy using the online install .run program.
I'm looking suggestions to troubleshoot this problem so I can use the designer tool.
