Starting as an online community manager

Great to have you on board, Tero!

btw, what forums here are the best for asking for feedback from the community? Is it this one or the website forum (which I just renamed this morning)
Any will do the job, at least in my case.
....
And most hardcore Qt developers are also reachable on Interest and Development "mailing lists":http://lists.qt-project.org/mailman/listinfo.
There isn't a single gathering point for the community. As you've already noted, there are many channels, including the "Google+ page":https://plus.google.com/104580575722059274792/posts, "LinkedIn group":http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Qt-Project-1531497, and the "YouTube channel":https://www.youtube.com/user/QtStudios. I believe most users only visit a subset of channels regularly.
The qt-project.org forums are mostly used by developers who use Qt's high-level API, and many questions here are along the lines of "How do I do XYZ using Qt?" or "How do I install/configure/deploy?" or "How do I fix this issue?". Often, users with questions about Qt's internals or roadmap are directed to the mailing lists; users with bug reports/suggestions are directed to JIRA.
By the way, Knut Yrvin started some major initiatives for qt-project.org, including bringing the site under Open Governance and investigating new backends for the Wiki. These came to a halt when he left Digia, but records can be found in the Wiki, e.g.
- http://qt-project.org/wiki/Qt_Project_Web_Meeting_Summary
- http://qt-project.org/wiki/Qt_Project_Web_Actions
Do you plan on picking them up?

Hi JKSH,
and thank you.
Tough one right away :)
Short answer, yes, that is part of what I plan to do.
I have read through those links, and have to say I agree on almost all the points they contain. I have been lurking around for a while and do see the pain points on the current site. Making changes makes a lot of sense. Having special purpose tools for tasks is always better than using a general tool.
However life isn't as simple as that. There are a lot of things involved.
Purely as an example, take switching the wiki to a mediawiki:
- how do people log in? currently there are two different logins (site and bugs), I know logging in to three places separately is a pain
- how do we get all the accounts switched over?
- what is the long term solution to user identities? I don't want to go about switching the login solution every year.
- how (and what) content is moved over to the new wiki? and who moves it?
- what is the impact on the documentation team? they release regularly on the wiki
- who sets it all up so that it's safe and secure? (ok, that's just work)
That's a lot of planning and doing to make a smooth transition. Not that I would be a stranger to that kind of work, but it requires a good lot of thinking before doing.
And that's where I need a lot of help. I know the community is full of people who are technically more competent than I am, so I need to find the right channels to get these kind of discussions going. -
Welcome to the community!
It really good to have finally someone taking a focus here.
As I have seen just now, you have already renamed the "Beta testing" to a more appropriate name.
As commented by JKSH there is no single channel as there also different places for collecting information and answers on Qt. For instance I really doubt that I know more than just a fraction of those channels.

Welcome Tero! Another one in the fine line of Qt community managers!

Welcome to the community! and good luck!!
That's a lot of planning and doing to make a smooth transition. Not that I would be a stranger to that kind of work, but it requires a good lot of thinking before doing.
Agreed; rushing would be counterproductive.
As for the MediaWiki example, I'd say that's a low priority at the moment. The existing Wiki could be nicer, but it works.
In contrast, the "cohesiveness of the community":http://qt-project.org/forums/viewthread/36970/ seems to be degrading and would benefit lots from immediate attention.
And that's where I need a lot of help. I know the community is full of people who are technically more competent than I am, so I need to find the right channels to get these kind of discussions going.
Please let us know how we can help you.
AFAICS, the mailing lists have the best mix of "end users" and Digia staff. (but I've never been to IRC myself, so I don't know what it's like there)

Hi and welcome aboard Tero Kojo.
I wish you all the best for your job, because I'm a great Qt fan, Qt is a handsome toolkit.
Please help me in making Qt-project.org and all it's related systems a good home for the Qt community!
I'm here to help, have discussions and make changes happen. If you have ideas, please ping me, I'll be at least here in the forums and on IRC.
I can tell you that I really enjoyed, and miss, some activities that were happening when Qt was under Nokia umbrella, like the Qt Ambassador program, and Qt app contests, where prizes where t-shirts, Qt books ...
Qt Ambassadors also had a private group in linkedin manage by Katherine Barrios, wich is now in Digia, but that is pratically dead by now, since the end of the program.I think this are great ways to get new people coding and developing with Qt.

Wohoo! Welcome and nice to see familiar faces back in Qt-land :)

Welcome Tero
We are waiting for Qt developer days 2013 videos.
Do you know when Qt developer days 2013 tech videos will be released?
I remembered Qt developer days 2012 videos were released before 2012 Christmas.
I hope you can help accelerating releasing Qt developer days 2013 tech videos.
-
Hi Tero and welcome! Looking forward to the changes :)
-
Warm Welcome to Tero in Qt world.
It's really been nice move for Qt world to take such kind of responsibility.
Best Luck for your future plans.... -
A belated welcome to Tero! Nice to have you here!
-
Thanks everyone :)
Looks like there is a lot to do here. And a lot of helpful people!
Please check the Ambassador program "reboot thread":http://qt-project.org/forums/viewthread/38225/ and write your suggestions there.
As for the 2013 Qt Developer Days videos, I think they are available on the QtStudios Youtube channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/QtStudios
If they aren't there, please ping me. I'll go and find them somewhere. -
Hi Tero,
2013 Qt Developer Days technical videos are not public as "utcenter said":http://qt-project.org/forums/viewthread/35276/.
bq. Today I noticed the dev days 2013 Berlin playlist now contains 39 videos. Unfortunately, only the keynotes are public, all the new uploads are private and cannot be viewed

Hi Tero,
welcome to the Qt community. Good luck in all what you try to do (and change?).
