Forum for Qt5 related questions?
-
I'd rather have a Qt4 / Qt5 tag (which would be shown alongside the topic title) than a dedicated forum - all the subforums in 'Qt Development' should exist for both Qt 4 and Qt 5. IMHO, duplicating them would be unnecessary.
In principle, I would agree, but I think that such a thing is currently not yet possible with the forum software in use here. A normal tag is not enough, IMHO, as you cannot see those when you view the list of topics. As Qt 5 is just an alpha, I think having a separate forum for now would be the best solution to separate the Qt 5 discussions from the normal stream of questions.

One more vote from me.

Let's say we agree that it temporarily makes sense to have a dedicated Qt 5 forum. I don't think we should start having duplicate forums either.
So temporarily we could have a Qt 5 forum. When do you think it should go away again? What would be its expiry date, so to speak?
-
How about until 5.0 or even 5.1 is released?
-
Can we have forums that are closed for new threads, but are still available for reading the posts, and probably sending comments to existing threads?

I would say, a forum for a major release before it is out is a good idea, something like a beta version forum, pre release forum :-)
If it would be alpha/beta/pre release, it could just stay open :-)

The discussion here shows that there are a "rat tail" of implications.
I think the reason for asking for a separate forum was the need to untangle the different topics a bit. This is a needed for Qt5 at the moment since not everybody has it in his/her focus at this time.
However, also in the future it is most likely required since an answer for Qt4 or Qt5 might be completely different.Keeping this in mind I would say that a separate forum is good and manageable up to something around 10% of the new threads. Around 20-25% it becomes a mess again.
A different tag came up in the discussion, but this is also a bit of a cumbersome solution. Because it is simply a tag and does not allow a separate type of sorting.
@Alexandra: Is there another option supported by this platform?
An additional layer of separation would be ideal. Something as a radio button when starting the thread (Qt4/Qt5/General) could help, but there is also a way for managing, displaying it differently afterwards?

That's what I thought initially as well.

Yes, that is possible. However, it means that we accumulate forums over time, that only serve as "archive" and will clutter the forum. I must admit, I'm not a fan. :P

That would solve my issues with the clutter at least. Let's turn it around: what exactly is the new forum supposed to solve?

How about we call such a forum something like "Future Qt" or "Qt in progress", so we'd be able to keep using the forum for all non-released versions?

As already stated, questions and solutions for 5.0 will differ significantly from those for the 4.x series. This will be even more the case later for 5.1 or 5.2, when the QML Desktop Components are ready for prime time.
My guess is that a big bunch of developers will jump into developing with Qt 5 only after a 5.1 release.
To ease answering stuff - and to avoid a myriad of "Are you using Qt 4 or 5" questions - separate forums would make sense for me. As time goes by, traffic would slowly move from the Qt 4 forum to the Qt 5 forum. But for the next couple of years, we will have much more Qt 4 related questions on Qt 5 times, than we have Qt 3 questions nowadays.

That is summarizing my gut's feeling.
Also this are the major points. However, another forum is not really the best solution.

I'm not so sure Qt 5 will be such a major break. It should be much less of a break than the Qt 3 to 4 transition. At that time we did not have Devnet, of course. I don't think duplicating the whole forum structure for Qt5 is a good idea at all. I would like to be able to (visually) tag topics the way Koahnig suggests), but that's not going to happen overnight. I think a Qt 5 forum makes sense:
For topics that are Qt5 specific, like scenegraph or QRegularExpression, or for queries on how to get it to build from source, but
Only as long as it is not mainstream yet. That means at least until there is a release, but probably for a while after that.
It is not going to be workable to make people indicate what system they are on. That includes OS, but also Qt version, form factor, etc. Sometimes that will be relevant, sometimes not. We have that issue already now, and it will not go away. A strict separation for all cases is not workable; tags will not be a magic bullet and nor will a separate forum. We all know we already move around topics regulary, and have a discussion on where something goes with some frequency.

http://qt-project.org/wiki/Category:Developing_Qt::Qt_5
http://qt-project.org/wiki/category:Developing_with_Qt::Qt_5
http://qt-project.org/wiki/Qt_5.0Is there a "smart" way to combine these 3 different wiki pages (I am sure there are more) into one?
I feel tempted to suggest that the solution for "almost anything" is to create a new group so... is there any other obvious way to "group" forum and wiki around a theme?
It quickly becomes too hard to maintain or find any content if they are all scattered around without any obvious "place"
