[Suggestion] New ranking for devnet - 'n' levels
-
There is a JIRA issue for new rank suggestions already: http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTWEBSITE-133
You are right. I think it's time to start a wiki page about points, ranks and rights to constructively address the current "Points & Ranks":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/ranks situation.
First I'd like to understand what is understood as the current situation. In short we have the rating system based on activity that leads to ranks, and we are planning to focus more on reputation (or quality if you like) with "thank this user" and QA forum features. And probably something for the wiki as well. Aaand a top secret project I'm not at liberty to divulge just yet :)
So before we talk about prototyping and how to do it the question is; what would we be working on?
Please do the quality-reputation system (or whatever you want its name to be ;), it affects to about anything here anyway.
But who says that ranks can’t be preserved? Maybe adding more of them if people wants to describe people better, and not just their button press count. Names are fun and gives unique feeling, after all. Everyone knows Ubuntu’s releases.
-
I've added an epic issue to JIRA for the quality-reputation system, with some of the ideas we have been playing with so far.
I want a more detailed description of the points->ranks->rights logic. Beyond the user's point of view. The description behind the "[what's this?]":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/ranks link is really good. (For the first.) You know that still a lot of questions have been raised.
I just want to get a bit more information about the system (call it: to look behind the scenes).
Most of the questions I've seen (and answered) are about avoiding the system from being gamed. There are a set of limits added, like 100 points for rating max per day and so on (quite a few now) to prevent that. We have two clever devnet members trying to script it and with some success I might add, but they are in contact with us and send us their work so we can close the holes and reset points if needed. All good and much appreciated while we're in beta. Keep it white-hat though, get in touch with us before trying something!
We also have this "magic script" that runs every night that goes through all the actions you've done the last 12 months a recalculates your points. This invalidates all hacks using the front end ajax to award points. Also this script makes sure the original tagger gets points for his tags even though someone else hijacked it.
The tag module and the group module is integrated with the ranks, but the forum module is not. Assigning any sort of moderator power is manually done by Alexandra after 1-to-1 contact, rest assured.
Not sure what else to tell you :)

(goes even more offtopic...)
”Editing an existing wiki page (limited to a max. of 5 pages per day): 3 points”
This means that for first 5 edits you get 3 points and nothing after that?
For the inner workings, I suppose it means that how points are calculated, when they are not added and such... (I had an example in my mind but then got distracted and forgot it sighs)
EDIT: Okay, this syntax is starting to drive me crazy... Maybe I’m too text-only.

Yes, exactly that. It's to prevent trolls from editing all wiki pages, changing just some spaces or one sentence and gaining a ton of points for that.

Yup... I thought it was different for some dummy reason I didn’t understand, misread some forum posts :) So thanks.

To make this clear: I'm not interested in technical details to maximize my points income. I'm interested in conceptual background:
- pseudo-logarithmic nature of the point-to-rank relation
- ideas behind user rights
- reasons behind point amounts to several actions
- and so on...

That would, in the end, be a larger discussion on how expert social networks work and come to be. Not that Alexandra and I are very good at it, but we had a set of theories and after much thinking and debate we thought we had something. And we are brave/naive enough to give it a shot!
It's a great topic for a devdays get-together that includes a nice meal and something to drink. Up for it?

Okay, back to business here. ;)
As Marius stated, we had long debates and quite some back an forth on the topic before we launched. I spent weeks on reading, thinking, researching on other networks, mind-mapping and more reading. The starting point was finding a solution for motivating users and rewarding activity on the site.
Now, that I think about it. Wouldn't all of this make a good blog posting rather than a forum entry?
Oh, and regarding further ranks: I'll think about it. :)
-
Not interested! It should be have more interesting privileges instead.

LMAO :-)

That's why I requested a new meta group: I think a nice meal and something to drink would help a lot but it's not mandatory ;)
It's nice to know that you have surprises for us. But:
Why do you worry about surprises from our side? -

I see. I saw your request and I was wondering about the intentions. Makes more sense now.
I am notoriously unworried...
Good to know this! I was only guessing when I read from Marius "top secret project that I’m not at liberty to divulge" ...I like surprises, but also to prepare some. (No, I have no special surprise pending right now.)
-
Ah. I see.
Sometimes things are not ready to be presented, mostly because we still need to figure out if and how they would work. And then there is cooperation with other teams or even external parties. We don't want to blow their cover before they feel comfortable. That's it.
We're not so much into the top-secret stuff here...
-
Alexandra, I understand that it can be complicated to decide what should be discussed in public (and: when). To be honest, I like reworking ideas in team work much more then making surprises.
I think the stuff in
*"Behind the Scenes":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/forums/viewcategory/1/
*in particular "Beta Testing":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/forums/viewforum/5/
*and also "Wiki Discussion":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/forums/viewforum/16/could be completed with a group and an own wiki. Thats my dream, not more :)

I heard you. ;)

Alexandra, many thanks! :)
It's "devnet meta":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/groups/devnet_meta
If you are interested in the DevNet (development) itself, then you are very welcome to join this group.
